ECN Reports Record Growth in 2024

ECN Expedition Cruise Network Reviews First Half of 2024

67% of ECN Expedition Cruise Operators See Growth in UK Market

The Expedition Cruise Network (ECN) has released its mid-year review for 2024, highlighting significant growth in the UK market. According to the report, 67% of ECN member operators reported an increase in UK bookings in the first half of 2024 compared to 2023. Over a quarter of these operators noted that the UK market is growing “significantly faster” or “more” than other international markets.

Key Findings

  • One member reported an 88% year-on-year increase in overall bookings from December 2023 to June 2024.

  • Another member saw a three-digit percentage growth in Antarctica bookings in February 2024 compared to February 2023.

  • General trends include a rise in group requests, greater interest in longer trips, activity programs, and luxury/wellness experiences.

  • Record-breaking sales weeks were observed in Q1 of 2024.

Popular Destinations

Polar destinations, particularly Antarctica, continue to attract significant interest. However, other destinations such as Iceland, Scotland, Indonesia/Melanesia, Fly the Drake itineraries, and the Galapagos are also seeing strong demand.

Sustainability Concerns

While most members report that concerns about climate change, the environment, and wildlife remain constant, these issues generated the most comments in the ECN review. Clients are increasingly voicing their desire for sustainable travel options. All ECN members have sustainability plans, emphasizing carbon reduction, conservation, citizen science programs, and responsible wildlife viewing.

ECN Initiatives

Martin Johnson, Chair and co-founder of ECN, highlighted the organization’s efforts to support the sector’s growth sustainably. The first half of 2024 saw two roadshows, numerous training webinars, two new training bootcamps, the launch of an Antarctica Selling Guide, and the announcement of the first dedicated expedition cruise conference scheduled for October.

Looking Ahead

Johnson stated, “This has been an incredible six months for the expedition cruise sector in the UK. We are keen to progress and support our members and the trade that sells the products in the most sustainable way possible.”
