Cruise Options

Types of Cruise

Fly Cruise

Self-explanatory - you fly and then cruise. Most cruise companies sell fly-cruises either as a package or as an optional extra. Cruise Agents may put together a package and offer it under one price. Alternatively, you can arrange your own flights and combine with a cruise-only offer. Note that if you decide on the latter, you should ensure your flight arrives in plenty of time prior to the ship sailing (for transatlantic flights its probably advisable to fly a day early). You will be responsible for any costs incurred should you be delayed.

Cruise Only

The advertised price is for the cruise alone, and will not include any transportation. This is a good option if the cruise departs from a home port (say Southampton if you live in the UK). It is quite a useful option too if you wish to combine with other travel - I have previously chosen cruise only from Cape Canaveral as part of a family trip to Orlando. Because no flights are included, this can be a more affordable option. Again, you will be responsible for any delays.

Cruise & Stay

This option combines the best of both worlds - a sea voyage plus a land based vacation. This will either be sold as a ready-made package by your tour operator, or as an customisation option on the cruise line website. A third option is to tailor-make your trip yourself - booking flights, hotels and cruise-only separately. Again, there is a caveat to this option as unpackaged holidays do not carry the same protection as ready-made tours, and you are liable for any costs incurred should you not make it to the port on time.

River Cruises

A cruise type gaining in popularity, River Cruises are a great way to explore the cities and countryside of the World. Whether it is a European river or one in the Far East, you will be able to explore at a leisurely pace. Don’t underestimate these little beauties - many are very luxurious and offer spa and pool facilities to rival their ocean-going counterparts. Obviously, given their smaller size don’t expect waterslides and theme-park type attractions (although many are now offering activity cruises). However, if you are after relaxation, comfort and good food you may find this is one for you.

Expedition Cruises

If you crave adventure and/or want to explore the far reaches of the planet, then an Expedition Cruise might be just what you are looking for. Exciting itineraries, on purpose-built smaller ships, include the Arctic Circle, Antarctica and the Galapogos Islands. Some ships offer basic amenities, whilst on others you don’t need to sacrifice simple luxury to indulge your adventurous side. If you wish to visit off-the-beaten-track locations and encounter the rarest of wildlife, an expedition cruise could be just what you are looking for.
