HX has announced an exciting new Northern Norway itinerary, set to launch in January 2026 at the peak of the aurora season. The “Ultimate Norway – Arctic Expedition Under the Northern Lights” is a seven-night journey inspired by the Norwegian concept of Friluftsliv, or ‘free air life,’ which emphasises the importance of spending time in nature. This immersive expedition will take place entirely above the Arctic Circle, exploring Norway’s natural wonders and cultural heritage.

“Since our first expedition in 1896 in Norway, HX has helped guests immerse themselves in some of the most incredible and remote places on earth,” said Alex McNeil, SVP Expeditions Product and Guest Experience. “While we’ve expanded our horizons and destinations over the last 128 years, our Norwegian heritage remains. We’re excited to unveil this unparalleled adventure that honours our roots and highlights our expertise in expedition today.”

Itinerary Highlights

The expedition will explore four iconic regions in Northern Norway: the Lyngen Alps, Senja, Lofoten, and Vesterålen. During the ten scheduled sailings from January to March 2026, guests will depart from and return to Tromsø aboard the MS Spitsbergen, enjoying a fully all-inclusive experience.

Guests will delve deep into Norwegian culture and the spectacular winter landscapes through three bespoke experiences unique to HX:

  • Bonfire Under the Polar Night: Enjoy local Norwegian snacks and camaraderie in the heart of nature.

  • Exclusive Evening at the Hurtigruten Museum in Stokmarknes: A unique cultural experience.

  • Traditional Scandinavian Sauna Session Followed by a Polar Plunge: An invigorating and authentic activity.

Additionally, the itinerary includes a variety of activities such as kayaking, whale watching, nature walks, alpine treks, snowshoeing, community visits, and ski touring, ensuring a rich and diverse adventure.

MS Spitsbergen: Small Expedition Cruising

With a capacity for 160 guests, MS Spitsbergen offers an intimate and relaxing atmosphere, allowing it to venture to places larger ships cannot reach. The ship features Scandinavian décor, comfortable cabins, ample public spaces with floor-to-ceiling windows, an observation deck, a Science Centre, and two restaurants, catering to all tastes and needs.

All-Inclusive Adventure

The all-inclusive package includes:

  • Three daily meals and drinks, including coffee, tea, and soft drinks available throughout the day.

  • Access to the sauna, hot tub, fitness centre, and the onboard Science Centre.

  • Gratuities, daily excursions, expedition gear, a water bottle, broadband Wi-Fi, and professional photos of the trip taken by the onboard photographer.

“We know Norway better than any cruise company, and this expedition connects deeply with the coast,” McNeil concluded. “Our guests can anticipate a truly authentic experience, whether they’re in search of the Northern Lights, local culture, or some of the most awe-inspiring nature on earth.”
