Rotterdam may not be the first city that springs to mind for a city break, and as a cruise port, it might initially seem underwhelming. However, it’s time to rethink! On a recent visit, I was struck by how much there was to see and do in this vibrant city—far too much to cram into the six hours I had in port. Here’s a guide to making the most of your brief visit.

The Port of Rotterdam is one of Europe’s busiest cruise hubs, with modern facilities capable of accommodating the world’s largest cruise ships. Holland America Line, founded in 1873, has deep ties to Rotterdam, with landmarks like the Hotel New York and SS Rotterdam marking this connection.

Markthal is a food lover’s paradise with an indoor market boasting over 100 food spots. Check out the stunning arched ceiling covered in the massive artwork ‘Horn of Plenty’. Sample local Dutch cheeses, stroopwafels, and international delicacies from numerous gourmet stalls. The must-go lunch spot.

4. Take a Harbour River Taxi

Experience one of the world’s busiest ports by river taxi for a thrilling ride across the harbour. For around €4.50, travel from one side to the other of the Nieuwe Maas river, with the driver stepping on the gas for a speed boat thrill in the centre. Various stops including SS Rotterdam (See Below).

The Erasmus Bridge (Erasmusbrug) is a Rotterdam landmark. Rising to a height of 139 metres and extending to a breadth of 800 metres, the bridge over the Nieuwe Maas river is nicknamed “The Swan” for its graceful design, Walk across this stunning structure from the cruise port for fantastic city views or admire it from a distance, beautifully illuminated at night.
