Windstar Cruises unveils a new era of river-to-ocean cruising

What happens when seasoned river cruisers have ticked off the Rhine, Danube, Douro and Mekong but still crave that same intimate, culturally rich style of travel? Windstar Cruises believes it has the answer, and it could reshape how experienced travellers explore the world.

The small ship specialist has announced a brand new concept: seamless river-to-ocean cruising. It is designed to take everything people love about river cruising and extend it far beyond inland waterways, without the need to switch ships or compromise on experience.

At the heart of this new approach is Windstar’s latest yacht, the Star Explorer, set to launch in December 2026.

A ship designed to go further

Purpose built for this hybrid style of travel, Star Explorer will carry just 224 guests in all-suite accommodation. Its size allows it to navigate rivers that are inaccessible to larger ocean ships while also venturing into coastal destinations that traditional river vessels simply cannot reach.

This opens up a new kind of itinerary. Guests can sail directly into city centres via rivers, then continue onwards to coastlines, islands and lesser visited ports in one continuous journey.

The concept is clearly aimed at experienced cruisers looking to move beyond the mainstream and explore destinations that feel more authentic and less crowded.

The first itineraries for 2027

Star Explorer’s inaugural programme showcases how river and ocean cruising can blend into one seamless experience.

Impressionist France (10 nights)

Sailing from Bordeaux to London HMS Belfast, this itinerary combines the Seine and Thames with overnights in Bordeaux, St Malo and Paris or Rouen. It also includes access to the D Day landing beaches, adding historical depth to the journey.

Connoisseur’s Delight: Northern Spain and Portugal (8 nights)

A natural next step for wine lovers, this sailing links Bordeaux’s waterways with Spain’s northern coast and Portugal’s Douro region, creating a rich culinary and cultural itinerary.

Moroccan Markets and Iberian Icons (8 nights)

Guests sail into Seville via the Guadalquivir River before continuing to a mix of Spanish and Moroccan destinations, offering a deeper cultural immersion than traditional European river routes.

Ireland Circumnavigation (10 nights)

This itinerary blends a river call at Cork City Quay with a full circumnavigation of Ireland, showcasing dramatic coastlines, castles and lesser visited ports.

More options for river cruise fans

While Star Explorer leads the way, Windstar is also highlighting existing itineraries that already blur the lines between river and ocean travel.

These include sailings across France, the British Isles, Holland and Belgium, plus longer adventures in Canada and Southeast Asia. Many incorporate river access into broader coastal journeys, offering a natural progression for travellers who have already explored Europe’s major waterways.

Standout options include:

  • French Feast: Normandy, Brittany and Aquitaine

  • British Isles Medley

  • Tulip Season in Holland and Belgium

  • Quebec and Newfoundland Adventure

  • Ancient Wonders of Vietnam and Angkor Wat

Each itinerary builds on the same principle of combining inland and ocean exploration with small ship intimacy.

Why this matters for cruisers

River cruising has surged in popularity over the past decade, but repeat travellers are increasingly looking for something new without losing the style of travel they love.

Windstar’s river-to-ocean concept taps directly into that demand. It offers:

  • Smaller ships with fewer crowds

  • Access to city centres and lesser visited ports

  • A more immersive, culturally focused experience

  • Seamless itineraries without changing vessels

For UK travellers in particular, the inclusion of sailings to and from London adds an extra layer of convenience.

The Lowdown

Windstar Cruises is not just launching a new ship. It is introducing a new category of cruising that bridges the gap between river and ocean travel.

For experienced river cruisers ready to go further, Star Explorer and its sister itineraries could offer the perfect next step. Expect more cruise lines to watch closely as this concept develops.
