Exploring Holland America Line’s Nieuw Statendam
First Impressions of Holland America Line’s Nieuw Statendam
We were invited onboard Holland America Line’s Nieuw Statendam this weekend for a fleeting visit whilst the ship was in Dover, ahead of her first U.K. season next year (2025).
Having never had the opportunity to enjoy Holland American Line before, we were really excited for our first experience of a cruise line whose wonderful reputation goes before it.
I must admit to having some preconceptions - for example, I’d heard they were more traditional than some other brands. Well if tradition translates into excellent service, fine dining and attention to detail, then I’m here for it.
Holland America Line is renowned for its sophisticated ambiance and outstanding service, and this was immediately obvious on boarding Nieuw Statendam. This beautiful ship, christened in 2018, offers an exceptional cruise experience that combines classic elegance with modern amenities. We only had time for a whistle-stop tour, so here are our highlights.
Aesthetic Beauty
Far from the dark wood and brass nautical elements I was expecting, Nieuw Statendam boasts contemporary design and a thoughtful layout that enhances the onboard experience. From the dazzling central atrium to the stylish cabins, every detail exudes sophistication. Guests find themselves surrounded by a harmonious blend of art, music, and cultural experiences throughout the ship. I loved being surprised by a new sculpture, art Installation or painting at every turn, most of them music-inspired.
Culinary Delights
For me a cruise is all about the food, so I make no apology for the length of this section. Food enthusiasts will delight in the diverse dining options available on Nieuw Statendam. I was surprised at just how many there were, and whilst we didn’t have the time (or capacity) to try them all, those we did were exceptional.
During our visit we were treated to a live cooking demonstration from the Fleet Executive Chef, Sinu Pillai, which was extremely entertaining. However, above all it was clear how much pride he had in the sourcing and preparation of the food presented to guests. For example, Chef Pillai explained that Holland America Line had become the first global cruise line to receive both Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certifications, recognising the highest-quality seafood that is sourced sustainably according to the strictest global standards. He stressed also how chefs used only the freshest, quality, in-season locally sourced produce.
From elegant dining rooms serving exquisite cuisine to casual eateries offering international flavours, there is something to satisfy every discerning foodie. The specialty restaurants on board showcase culinary masterpieces created by talented chefs, providing a gastronomic journey that is not to be missed.
Here is an overview of dining venues onboard.
The Dining Room (Deck 2 & 3) (Included)
Serving as the main dining venue, the Dining Room on Nieuw Statendam offers a sophisticated ambiance where guests can enjoy a varied menu of delicious dishes prepared by talented chefs. Whether it’s for a hearty breakfast, leisurely lunch, or a multi-course dinner, this restaurant is the perfect setting for a memorable meal. Guests have the option of traditional early/late dinner sitting, or the increasingly popular open seating “As You Wish Dining”. As part of the special tasting menu we enjoyed, I chose the Slow Roasted Beef Tenderloin with Fresh Morels, followed by the signature Stroopwaffle Cheesecake which were delicious and both available on The Dining Room menu.
Pinnacle Grill (Deck 2) (Speciality Restaurant)
For those seeking a more upscale dining experience, the Pinnacle Grill is the place to be. This elegant steakhouse features premium cuts of meat, fresh seafood, and decadent desserts on its menu, all paired with an extensive wine list. The intimate atmosphere and attentive service make dining at Pinnacle Grill a truly special occasion.
We were fortunate to dine here during our visit, and were seated at a much-coveted window seat. The special lunch menu we enjoyed on our visit featured dishes from both Pinnacle Grill (I had the superb poached lobster), alongside those from The Dining Room, which we had seen prepared earlier - a white asparagus and smoked ham starter and fresh, locally sourced dover sole fillets in lemon butter.
Tamarind (Deck 10) (Speciality Restaurant)
Tamarind is a Pan-Asian restaurant, where guests can try dishes inspired by the Far East - from sushi and sashimi to wok-seared specialties. The elegant décor and panoramic ocean views provide the perfect backdrop for a memorable dining experience. Within Tamarind you will also find Nami Sushi offering a tempting range of sushi rolls. Whilst it wasn’t open for business when we were onboard (available for dinner only), it looked a very elegant and classy restaurant.
Club Orange (Deck 2) - Reserved for Suite Guests
This delightful restaurant, where our cooking demonstration was held, is exclusively for Neptune and Pinnacle suite guests. Decorated with highlights of Holland America’s signature orange from which it gets its name, and with an open kitchen, Club Orange is open for breakfast and dinner.
Rudi's Sel de Mer (Deck 2) (Speciality Restaurant)
This is a very special and intimate seafood brasserie (although meat and vegetarian dishes are available), named after Master Chef Rudi Sodamin.
Canaletto (Deck 9) (Speciality Restaurant)
This is Nieuw Statendam’s dinner-only Italian restaurant, situated in a cordoned-off section of The Lido. Serving a range of Italian dishes, including pastas, fish and meat dishes.
Lido Market (Deck 9) (Included)
For a more casual dining option, guests can visit the Lido Market, a buffet-style eatery offering a wide selection of international cuisine. From made-to-order omelettes at breakfast to themed lunch and dinner options, the Lido Market is a popular choice for those looking to enjoy a quick and delicious meal. I was amazed at just how many tempting options were available as we passed through - from pizzas to steaks and the freshest salads, to some delectable looking desserts. The space was airy and bright with floor to ceiling windows, with plenty of seating and a fresh white and green decor.
Dive-In (Deck 9) (Included)
This is Nieuw Statendam’s pool deck grill where you can indulge in gourmet burgers (no less than 7 choices plus a build-your-own option), hot dogs, and crispy fries served with your choice of toppings. Although we didn’t stop for a bite, the food looked AMAZING! This casual outdoor eatery is the perfect spot to grab a quick bite while enjoying the sun and sea breeze and I could imagine myself lunching here on a sea day - the food all looked delicious with many more choices than I’ve seen on other cruise lines at this type of grill.
New York Deli & Pizza (Deck 10) (Included)
Another casual poolside option, this one serving a variety of 9” Pizza, salads and deli items. Open early for an alternative breakfast till midnight for those late night snacks. Movie-night snacks are also available here including pretzels, popcorn and more.
Grand Dutch Café (Deck 3) (Included)
Giving a nod to their Dutch heritage, the Grand Dutch Café is a staple of Holland America Line ships. Offering coffee, beer (at additional cost), sandwiches, pancakes and other delectable snacks throughout the day, it is the perfect spot for people watching being situated off the atrium.
Explorations Café (Deck 12)
Situated in the crows nest position, Explorations Café serves up tea/coffee (chargeable) with a selection of complimentary pastries, cookies and sandwiches all served with a view.
Entertainment and Activities
From the moment you board and stroll along the iconic Music Walk, you just know that this ship has entertainment in its soul. With three music venues in close proximity to each other - B.B. King's Blues Club, Billboard Onboard, and the Rolling Stone Rock Room - it is a music-lover’s paradise. This is borne out by the range of music-related art work throughout the ship.
Nieuw Statendam guests can indulge in a wide array of entertainment options during their cruise. From spectacular live performances, Broadway-style shows and comedy performances at the World Stage to immersive music experiences and classical recitals.
If you seek a more relaxed atmosphere, there are lounges where guests can unwind with a cocktail and enjoy the sounds of a piano or a jazz band. Additionally, interactive game shows and trivia nights are held regularly for those looking to engage in some light-hearted fun, or participate in dance classes, cooking demonstrations, and even digital workshops throughout the cruise.
Film enthusiasts can also enjoy movie screenings either under the stars on the Lido Deck or in the comfort of the onboard cinema (don’t forget those snacks from the New York Pizza & Deli).
For those looking to relax and rejuvenate, the Greenhouse Spa & Salon offers a tranquil oasis to unwind, or to be pampered with various treatments, and should you be in search of more energetic pursuits, there is a state of the art gym and spin room, plus various exercise classes. There is also a Pickleball Court and jogging track up on the top deck, and also some al fresco exercise machines. For an added touch of luxurious indulgence, there is (adult-only) The Retreat up on Observation Deck.
There are, of course, also two luxurious pools (one with retractable roof) in which to cool off plus several hot tubs. I loved the pool towels in citrus shades, plus the showers around the pool side which are fabulous with etched class surrounds. I imagine that the Sea View Pool will look stunning after dark, as it is edged with some beautiful lighting.
Accommodation
The cabins/staterooms and suites on Nieuw Statendam are beautifully appointed and as standard include the following amenities (with additions in Suite class):
Daily housekeeping
Complimentary 24-hour room service
Elemis Aromapure soap, lotion, shampoo
Luxurious bathrobes
Generous storage
Fresh fruit upon request
Safe
Ice service
Shoeshine
TV with On Demand movies, programming
Choose from Inside, Ocean View, Verandah, Vista Suite, Signature Suite or Neptune Suites. As the ship was full at the time of our visit, we were only able to visit an inside and an obstructed-view Verandah cabin, both of which were impressive with light wood accents, plenty of storage and beautiful bathrooms.
Itineraries
Excitingly, from next year Nieuw Statendam will be home-porting in Dover and will offer a variety of itineraries. Whether you prefer exploring the scenic fjords of Norway, basking in the sun-drenched beaches of the Canary Islands, or immersing yourself in the rich culture of the Mediterranean, there is a cruise itinerary to suit every taste.
So what was our overriding impression?
With its blend of elegant design, exceptional dining options, diverse entertainment, and fabulous itineraries, Nieuw Statendam is an optimum choice. The ship far exceeded our expectations, which were set high, and the friendly staff are great ambassadors for the brand. We are already looking at Holland America Line (and specifically Nieuw Statendam) for one of our next cruises - that says it all.
