Last-minute European river cruises: VIVA Cruises adds summer availability

Fresh from our recent cruise on the Douro, VIVA Cruises has highlighted a selection of last-minute river cruise departures across Europe for late summer and autumn 2026 that I want to share with you.

We’ve just returned from a memorable journey aboard PORTO MIRANTE, cruising the Douro on VIVA Cruises’ Treasures of the Douro itinerary, so the timing of this latest announcement caught our attention.

The seven-night Douro itinerary is among a selection of VIVA Cruises departures still available between August and October, giving travellers the chance to experience some of Europe’s most scenic rivers without having to wait until next year.

Cruise Ship River Departure From
Pure Culture Along the Seine VIVA BEYOND Seine August & October 2026 £1,695pp
Treasures of the Douro PORTO MIRANTE Douro August, September & October 2026 £2,125pp

Last-minute river cruises for 2026

VIVA Cruises’ current selection, described as its Perfect Summer Voyage collection, covers several European rivers, including the Seine, Rhône and Douro.

The available departures include:

Treasures of the Douro

Seven nights | PORTO MIRANTE | From £2,125pp

The Treasures of the Douro itinerary sails between Porto and the Douro Valley, combining river scenery with visits to historic towns, vineyards and some of Portugal’s most attractive landscapes. This is the itinerary we sailed on last month.

There are departures in August, September and October 2026.

Having recently sailed this route ourselves, we found the Douro particularly appealing for its combination of spectacular scenery, wine country and relatively small-scale river cruise experience. Of course, it goes without saying the ship is gorgeous.

Pure Culture Along the Seine

Seven nights | VIVA BEYOND | From £1,695pp

For those looking towards France, Pure Culture Along the Seine offers seven nights aboard VIVA BEYOND, with departures in August and October.

The itinerary follows the Seine through the French countryside, with opportunities to explore historic destinations along the river.

Whispers of the Rhône

Seven nights | VIVA VOYAGE | From £1,525pp

VIVA VOYAGE operates the seven-night Whispers of the Rhône itinerary, with departures in August, September and October.

Prices currently start from £1,525 per person.

Rhône Reverie: Arles

Seven nights | VIVA VOYAGE | From £1,625pp

There is also a September departure of Rhône Reverie: Arles, again aboard VIVA VOYAGE.

The seven-night cruise starts from £1,625 per person.

Culinary Cruise Portugal – Wine & Pleasure

Eight nights | PORTO MIRANTE | From £3,375pp

PORTO MIRANTE also features in VIVA Cruises’ autumn programme with its eight-night Culinary Cruise Portugal – Wine & Pleasure, departing 6 October 2026.

Starting at £3,375pp, this is the more food-and-wine-focused option for travellers looking to combine a Douro cruise with Portugal’s culinary and wine traditions.

What is included with VIVA Cruises?

One of the attractions of VIVA Cruises is its all-inclusive approach.

Included in the cruise fare are all meals, with flexible dining across up to three restaurants, together with a selection of premium drinks including wine, spirits and cocktails.

Guests also receive:

  • Complimentary High Tea once during the cruise

  • A daily replenished minibar

  • Nespresso coffee machine in the cabin

  • A welcome bottle of prosecco

  • Rituals toiletries, with Typology products on VIVA Boutique ships

  • Wi-Fi

  • Gratuities

That makes the headline fare easier to compare with river cruise operators where some of these extras may be charged separately.

Why consider a last-minute river cruise?

River cruising can be particularly attractive for a last-minute break because you unpack once and then wake up somewhere different each day, without the need to organise a series of hotels and transfers.

And while river conditions have created challenges for some European itineraries this summer, VIVA Cruises says it has selected departures where guests can continue to enjoy the scenery and experiences associated with river cruising.

As VIVA Cruises’ director of sales for the UK & Ireland and Australia & New Zealand, Michelle Daniels, explains, the company has selected journeys intended to offer travellers a last-minute opportunity while maintaining the range of experiences available.

For anyone considering a late-summer European escape, the remaining 2026 departures are therefore worth investigating sooner rather than later.

Prices and availability can change, so check the latest details before booking.

The Lowdown

We recently sailed aboard PORTO MIRANTE on the Treasures of the Douro itinerary and had a wonderful time. Read our first-hand account of the cruise in the next issue of Sail Away magazine for a closer look at what it is actually like to cruise the Douro with VIVA Cruises.
