I’m hoping to take my bucket-list cruise to Alaska next year and had lots of questions. I’ve now done my research and thought I’d share it as I know many of you will be planning the same itinerary.
I’ve written this as a cruise destination piece, but it’s a useful resource for any trip to Alaska.
For those of you with experience of the region, what are your tips or recommendations? Please leave some helpful advice in comments for others to share.
Where is Alaska?
Alaska is a state located in the northwest corner of North America. It is separated from the rest of the United States by Canada and shares a maritime border with Russia. The state of Alaska is part of the United States and is known for its vast wilderness, including mountains, glaciers, and diverse wildlife.
What is the Best Month to go to Alaska?
The best month to visit Alaska depends on what you want to experience and the activities you're interested in. Generally, the summer months of June, July, and August offer milder weather, longer daylight hours, and a wide range of outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, wildlife viewing, and exploring national parks.
If you're interested in seeing the Northern Lights, the winter months from September to April provide better opportunities, with the darkest and coldest months of December and January offering higher chances of clear skies for viewing the auroras. That said, few cruises sail after September.
Ultimately, it's important to consider your specific interests and the type of experience you're seeking when deciding the best time to visit Alaska. Read my related post When is the Best Month to Visit Alaska?
What is the Best Side of a Cruise Ship to be on in Alaska?
The choice of which side of a cruise ship is best in Alaska largely depends on the itinerary and direction of travel. However, there are some general considerations to keep in mind:
1️⃣ Southbound Route:
If your cruise sails from Alaska to a southern destination like Vancouver, Canada, sitting on the starboard side (right side when facing forward) can offer scenic views of the coastline and mountains.
2️⃣ Northbound Route:
For cruises travelling from Vancouver to Alaska, the port side (left side when facing forward) can provide similar scenic views of the coastline and mountains.
3️⃣ Glacier Viewing:
If your cruise includes visits to glaciers, such as Hubbard Glacier or Glacier Bay, the side of the ship may not matter as much since the ship will often turn to give passengers views from both sides. However, checking the specific itinerary or seeking advice from the cruise line can help you identify which side might provide better views during glacier viewing.
Remember that regardless of which side you choose, many ships have outdoor decks and viewing areas that allow you to move around and enjoy the scenery from different perspectives.
How Much Does a 7-Day Alaska Cruise Cost?
The cost of a 7-day Alaska cruise can vary depending on several factors such as the cruise line, the type of cabin, the time of year, and any additional amenities or packages included. On average, the price range for a 7-day Alaska cruise only can be anywhere from $800 to $3,000 per person. plus flights which can increase the fare considerably if travelling from the U.K. or Europe.
Lower-priced options tend to be available during the shoulder seasons of May and September when the weather may be cooler but still enjoyable. The peak season of June, July, and August tends to have higher prices due to increased demand.
Additionally, the type of cabin you choose, such as an inside cabin, ocean-view cabin, or balcony cabin, will affect the price. Luxury cruises or specialty cruises may have higher price points.
It's important to note that these price ranges are estimates, and it's recommended to check with various cruise lines, travel agents, or online booking platforms to get specific and up-to-date pricing information based on your preferred travel dates and cabin preferences.
What is the Most Expensive Month for an Alaska Cruise?
The most expensive month for an Alaska cruise is typically July. July is the peak of the summer season in Alaska and coincides with the highest demand for cruises. The weather is generally milder, and the days are longer, allowing for more outdoor activities and better wildlife viewing opportunities. Due to the high demand, cruise prices during July tend to be at their highest, reflecting the popularity of the month for Alaska cruises.
As discussed above, if you are looking to save money, you may consider booking your Alaska cruise during the shoulder seasons of May and September. Prices during these months are often lower, and you can still enjoy beautiful scenery and a range of activities, although the weather may be slightly cooler.
