Cabins on P&O Iona
Before booking any cruise it is worth considering the type of cabin you would like, especially if the ship is new to you. There’s a cabin to suit everyone on Iona. If you are travelling alone, P&O Iona has a range of solo cabins from which to choose. If you are going to spend most of your time on deck or like a value option, then an inside cabin might be a good choice for you. If you must have daylight, or a view of the ocean, then consider a Sea View Cabin. For a little bit more luxury and the benefit of your own outdoor space to breathe in the ozone, then a Balcony Cabin is a must. However, if money is no object and only the best will do - or you want to indulge yourself or a loved one for a special occasion- then check out the Suite options. Iona has a cabin with your name on it - its just deciding which one that is the difficult bit. Hopefully this article will make it easier to make up your mind. When you have decided on the type and grade/category of cabin you want, don’t forget to check out Iona’s deck plans to select the best position to suit your needs.

Which Cabins to Avoid on P&O Iona
As can be seen above, all cabins are very well appointed on Iona, but as with any ship, some are less desirable dependent on your personal preferences.
Cabins on Deck 5
Unlike most of the balcony cabins on Iona, these Standard Balcony cabins on Deck 5 are enclosed or “sheltered balconies” set within the metal hull of the ship. These balconies tend to be more shady than others and the interior seems darker as a result. The balconies themselves are very small and narrow, being just the depth of a deck chair. There is no sliding balcony door on these cabins, being replaced by a heavy outward-opening door. Due to the proximity to the waterline, these cabins have storm doors which are closed by the crew during inclement weather, meaning you lose the use of the balcony space.
Of course, being so close to the water you are well-placed for watching wildlife and getting the wonderful sounds of the ocean - so if this is a priority then don’t be deterred.
Cabins on Deck 8
If I was being picky, I would say Deck 8 (Promenade Deck) would not be my own first choice. There are some smaller balcony cabins (Standard and Deluxe) and some of the new Conservatory Mini-suites on this deck. The cabins themselves have the same facilities as their counterparts on other decks. The downside (in my opinion) of these cabins is that they all back on to the wraparound promenade deck, so their balconies are more like terraces and do not provide a sea view unless you are standing. This is because the promenade walkway, and then a glass barrier stands between the cabins and the sea. These cabins lack privacy as guests can potentially see all as they stroll past (particularly if they are taller), especially at night with the cabin lights on if you forget to pull the curtains. Also at some points along Deck 8 there is seating immediately in front of some balconies, and three infinity whirlpools obstruct the view of others, So as well as partially obstructing the view, it could be quite noisy. Cabins affected are 8309-8312 and 8322-8330.
I’m also concerned that the balcony door is a potential access point from the deck, worth bearing in mind if, like me, you prefer to leave the balcony doors open to hear the ocean at night.
Of course, on the plus side these cabins are in a great position for accessing public areas such as the bars and restaurants. Some of them (at the narrowest point) have extra large balconies (terraces) so would be perfect for families.
Other cabins to avoid if you prefer complete privacy are those situated directly under the bridge, which are overlooked. If you enjoy peace and quiet perhaps avoid cabins directly under the pool deck or Horizon restaurant or above the nightclub or theatre.
