DIY (Decorate It Yourself) Fish Extenders Available on Amazon

When I started my research, after booking our first Disney cruise, I had no idea what references to Fish Extenders meant. I thought posters were talking a different language, and in fact they were - the language of experienced Disney cruisers.

What are Fish Extenders?

Fish Extenders (or FEs as they are referred to by the initiated) are over-door hanging pockets or organisers that Disney cruise guests attach to the fish-shaped hook outside their cabin door. This hook is used by the ship’s crew to leave messages or small items, but Disney guests use it for exchanging gifts with fellow cruisers.

It adds another layer of magic to the whole experience, and people really go to town on decorating their fish extenders, and the forward planning involved in sourcing gifts adds to their anticipation.

Why is it Called a Fish Extender?

There is a very simple and logical reason the pouches are called fish extenders, and that is because the hangers “ext3nd” down from the fish-shaped hook outside cabin doors which depict the cabin number.

How It Works

Participants join pre-arranged groups, often organised on online forums in Facebook or other social media. Each group member brings small gifts to distribute to others in the group. The gifts can be Disney-themed, personalised, or even homemade. Throughout the cruise, these gifts are delivered to the other cabins in your group - often on a daily basis - and you will receive gifts in return.

Joining and finding a Fish Extender Group

You’ll need to join a Fish Extender group in advance. This is typically done via Facebook groups dedicated to specific Disney Cruise sailings. Some groups have specific themes or rules, so be sure to check the details. Usually this is along the lines of like for like gifts etc (i.e don’t just gift some stickers and expect Disney merch in return). Search on face book groups for your ship sailing - e.g “Disney Dream 1st September” and ask to join the list, making sure to check the rules.

Sourcing Your Fish Extender

Fish Extenders can be sourced on Amazon

Much to my surprise, a quick search on Amazon revealed several options of fish extenders, with even more results when searching for hanging pockets. Etsy is another good source, especially for Disney- decorated versions. If you are a bit “crafty” you could make your own, but however you obtain yours, you will want to go to town on decorating it.

Fish Extender gifts on a Disney Cruise can range from simple and fun to elaborate and personalised. The key is to keep them thoughtful, creative, and Disney-themed if possible.

How Big Should Fish Extender Be?

There is no hard and fast rule, but a good idea is for there to be a pouch for each cabin occupant. Generally they will be comprised of four pockets.

What’s the Difference Between ‘Pixie Dust’ and Fish Extenders?

Ah, now that is a topic all of its own. Simply put, ‘Pixie Dust’ refers to little gifts or trinkets guests might leave randomly at cabin doors. They may or may not be placed in Fish Extenders - sometimes just left on the hook. Fish extenders can of course catch any ‘pixie dust’ that comes their way. Whilst more informal, there are organised Pixie Dust groups to be found on Facebook. Pixie Dust gifts are like,y to be smaller and more inexpensive than other gifts.

Did We Have a Fish Extender?

We booked very last minute and were travelling as an adult couple without children. I therefore didn’t really think it was appropriate to participate this time round. However, I loved seeing all the hangers and gifts appearing on doors through the corridors, and I really wish I had joined in the fun. It would have added another dimension to the cruise for us and provided some small momentos to take home to my grandchildren. I would definitely do so on future cruises.

These thoughtful and creative Fish Extender gifts add an extra bit of magic to the Disney Cruise experience and help create lasting memories for both you and your fellow cruisers!
